MISSION LOG // CHAPTER 05 · THE LOST PILOT
THE PILOT WHO NEVER RETURNED
POLAR BASE // EARTH

Beneath the polar base, a Variable Mecha had remained dormant for seventeen years. The aircraft was sealed away from the ordinary movement of the facility, its last pilot access buried in an old record. UNIT 158 approached without a memory of entering its cockpit. She had no recalled mission aboard it, no remembered departure, and no explanation for the years recorded in its system. Then the aircraft came online. The change began the moment she drew near. A machine that had waited through seventeen years of silence responded to her presence, leaving the dormant state before she had issued an instruction or requested access to its controls.
The recognition appeared on the display: PILOT RECOGNITION // CONFIRMED. Beneath it, the access history referred to a pilot from seventeen years earlier. UNIT 158 checked the identification against her own designation. The machine recognized her, but she could not supply the memory that would make its record understandable. There was no remembered flight to connect her present mission with the aircraft’s past. The gate had recognized her without authorization; now the Variable Mecha did the same. Two systems held a certainty her own history could not support. She remained beside the aircraft, reading the record again. Its last pilot had never returned, and it was treating her arrival as recognition.
The aircraft remembered its pilot. UNIT 158 remembered nothing.
