POLAR SIGNAL

POLAR SECTOR // EARTH

UNIT 158 in the polar sector

When the polar network went silent, UNIT 158 remained online. Her white tactical system continued to register the cold, the terrain, and the empty channels around her. Across the frozen frontier, surveillance had once connected every autonomous unit to a single monitoring grid. Now the grid returned nothing. She checked her own identification and repeated the connection request. The central AI did not answer. There was no new instruction, no confirmed fault, and no explanation for the silence. Only her own systems continued to respond. Beneath the ice, beyond the network’s mapped range, a faint transmission began to repeat. It was still active when everything else had stopped.

UNIT 158 isolated the transmission from the interference crossing the ice field. Its position lay outside the records available to her, where the surveillance map offered no registered source. She could verify the signal, but not the system sending it. The absence of central guidance left her with a simple choice: remain inside the silent network, or investigate what was still transmitting beyond it. She kept the channel open and turned toward the frozen frontier. The signal did not explain why the polar grid had fallen silent. It offered something more immediate—a direction. As she followed it, the boundary between a routine assignment and an unknown mission began to disappear.

Beyond the mapped ice, something was still calling.
