MISSION LOG // CHAPTER 02 · THE POLAR SIGNAL

UNREGISTERED ROUTE

POLAR SECTOR // EARTH

UNIT 158 follows a signal beneath the polar ice

A new route appeared beneath the frozen sector while UNIT 158 reviewed the navigation data. The path did not exist on any registered map. There was no official designation, no recorded access point, and no destination the central system could verify. Yet the route remained visible on her display. The transmission from beneath the ice led toward the mountain line, drawing her away from the monitored surface. UNIT 158 compared the path with the records still available in her tactical system. Nothing matched. The route was not a correction to the map. It was a path the map had never acknowledged, arriving through a channel that should have been silent.

She followed the signal deeper into the frozen sector. As the surface network weakened, the transmission beneath the ice grew stronger. Distance should have made communication less reliable, but this channel seemed to become clearer with every step away from the registered route. UNIT 158 searched the message for coordinates and a sender identification. Neither appeared. The display offered no authority she could contact and no record she could use to confirm what lay ahead. Instead, one identifier remained on the screen: UNIT 158. She read it again. The route had no known origin, but it carried her designation as if her presence were already part of its instructions.

The route did not tell her where it began. It already knew who was following it.
